Achinreir Farm
Our farm is located in the picturesque parish of Ardchattan on Loch Creran’s southern shore in Argyll, near Barcaldine village and at the foot of Glen Salach. It features 80 acres of permanent pasture for natural cattle grazing and a central, biodiverse woodland, home to native trees and moisture-loving plants - typical of Scotland’s west coast temperate rainforest which is now a rare and endangered habitat.
We run a fold of 20 pedigree Highland cattle which play an intrinsic role in our conservation grazing system, helping us to manage and regenerate native habitats and species.
Across the farm are scattered stands of birch, oak, larch, beech, and thorn trees, which enhance biodiversity and offer shelter and browsing fodder for our cattle. Barcaldine Forest provides some shelter from harsh winter weather, while the region's wet climate ensures plentiful natural running water for our livestock.
Highland cows historically were milked to feed families across the Scottish Highlands, and the very high butter fat content in their milk produced legendary butter and cheese in the days of the shielings - We milk some of our cows to demonstrate the quality of their milk supplying our farm diversification business Highland Fold Ice Cream. for its unique signature Highlander Ice cream.
